Slopeside Design

We fell in love with the idea of turning local landscapes into one-of-a-kind wooden topographic maps. We laser-cut birch slices, dye them and then assemble them by hand to create a unique artwork that brings the mountains to life. We begin with real-world topographic data, traditional 2D maps, and our own hand-drawn terrain features. Then, we blend it all together using our custom software. The result? A one-of-a-kind design that captures unique terrain — and lets us add your personal touches, too. Once the design is locked in, we laser-cut thin layers of birch plywood, add dye for contrast, and stack them into a multilayered masterpiece. Each layer reveals more of the land’s shape, almost like you’re peeking at the real mountain in 3D.

Give us a brief description of your manufacturing processes and philosophy

We merge digital precision with hands-on craftsmanship — using custom-built software, high-resolution terrain data, and laser cutting and etching to produce layered wooden maps filled with intricate terrain lines and thousands of miniature trees. We design for repeatability without compromising quality, building timeless, heirloom-grade art with minimal waste and maximum aesthetic impact.

How many employees and/or contractors do you work with?

Slopeside is currently operated by founders Ash & Jiselle Olsson, with support from collaborators on a project basis.

What brought you to the Kootenays and how long have you been here?

Jiselle grew up in Kimberley, while Ash is originally from Australia. The two met during a ski holiday at Big White and eventually made their way back to Kimberley in 2018. They’ve since put down roots, drawn by the ski culture, strong sense of community, and slower pace of life. The landscape and lifestyle have become the foundation for Slopeside’s creative work.

Tell us about the history and relative work experience of your founder(s).

Jiselle worked in the service industry before training as an electrician and later specializing in HVAC and control systems. Her practical skills and attention to detail now play a key role in Slopeside’s production process—from workshop operations to product finishing.

Ash has a background in industrial design, product development, and manufacturing systems. He previously co-founded a hardware business in Australia and developed advanced automation and CNC tooling systems. At Slopeside, he brings that same engineering mindset to the world of fine art—creating intricate topographic pieces that blend precision and storytelling.

Describe the mission, vision, goals, and aspirations of your company.

Slopeside Design exists to turn mountain memories into tangible, lasting works of art. Our vision is to become the gold standard in topographic ski art—anchored in quality, local collaboration, and a genuine love of the alpine. We aspire to scale sustainably while staying deeply rooted in the Kootenays.
