Important Findings From the 2023 KORE
Regional Roundtable Sessions
In the summer of 2023, the Kootenay Outdoor Recreation Enterprise (KORE) engaged in a research project with Selkirk Innovates to develop a regional sector profile of the outdoor rec-tech sector in the Kootenays, and to determine strategic priorities for those in the industry. The research involved in-person focus groups at six communities including Nelson, Invermere. Revelstoke, Fernie, Kimberley/Cranbrook and Rossland/Trail, as well as a survey sent to businesses involved in the sector throughout the region. The project was supported by the Province of British Columbia’s REDIP program.
Key findings from the focus groups and the survey highlighted the diversity within the KORE network and the value businesses find in collaboration through networking, mentorship, and exposure to new markets; all of which enhance sales. Business owners suggested that KORE could enhance its support by offering more tailored services and activities aimed at promoting growth and sustainability. And the need for more comprehensive business support services was also recognized.
Based on these findings, recommendations for KORE included key takeaway points such as:
The overall goal of these efforts is to foster a robust outdoor recreation technology sector that supports business growth and sustainability while maintaining the unique cultural and environmental ethos of the Kootenay region.
KORE thanks Community Futures for providing meeting locations and representatives that helped facilitate the roundtables. Thanks also goes to Michelle Laurie from Rossland who provided graphic facilitation to support the roundtable conversations as well as Selkirk Innovates, which developed the roundtable facilitation format and sector survey and summarized the research.
