We’re excited to announce that KORE has joined 1% for the Planet as an Environmental Partner. Businesses can now pledge to contribute 1% of their annual sales or budget to support KORE with its mission to elevate the outdoor recreation economy in the Kootenay region of British Columbia and to create a Kootenay-based centre for outdoor gear circularity.

The KORE Re-Hub will be an outdoor gear repair and up-cycling facility dedicated to keeping equipment out of the landfill and providing essential training and job creation opportunities. As a 1% for the Planet Environmental Partner, KORE is now eligible to receive donations from 1% for the Planet members to support KORE’s work and be at the forefront of a clean-growth economy by repairing and repurposing textiles from gear users and major outdoor gear manufacturers. This initiative will positively impact sustainable change across the entire industry.

Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, 1% for the Planet is a global network with over 5400 business members and 6500 environmental partners in 111 countries. To date it has tracked more than a half billion dollars in certified giving.

“KORE is over the moon to be part of 1% for the Planet,” says Board Chair Powder Matt Mosteller. “We live in one of the most beautiful mountain regions in the world and it’s important to our members that we keep it that way. With this initiative, we’re helping do our part to make a difference for the planet and our mountain communities while creating environmentally friendly rural economic development.”

According to Yvon Chouinard, the intent of 1% for the Planet “is to help fund these diverse environmental organizations so that collectively they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems.”

Businesses can demonstrate their commitment to the environment and community economic development in the Kootenay region of British Columbia by joining 1% for the Planet as a member and choosing KORE as an Environmental Partner. Once a business donates 1% of their annual sales, receipts are certified by 1% for the Planet to ensure accountability.

Businesses That Have Donated To KORE

Gear re-Store in Calgary has donated to KORE via the 1% For The Planet program. CEO Russell McPherson spoke at the KORE Summit in 2023 and he says he chose to donate because “KORE is most closely aligned with the community that Gear re-Store supports as a business. We support the KORE mission and are grateful to have the opportunity to make a contribution that could seed other giving.”

KORE has received a 1% For The Planet donation from New Westminster, BC-based PBJ Merch Co. Founder Rich Patterson says his “deep roots in Cranbrook and connections across the Kootenay region, where I spent my youth skiing, camping, and revelling in the outdoors, inspire our dedication to environmental stewardship and to supporting organizations like KORE.”
