KORE Roundtable in Nelson
In the summer of 2023, the Kootenay Outdoor Recreation Enterprise (KORE) engaged in a research project with Selkirk Innovates to develop a regional sector profile of the outdoor rec-tech sector in the Kootenays, and to determine strategic priorities for those in the industry. The research involved in-person focus groups at six communities including Nelson, Invermere, Revelstoke, Fernie, Kimberley/Cranbrook, and Rossland/Trail, as well as a survey sent to businesses involved in the sector throughout the region. The project was supported by the Province of British Columbia’s REDIP program.
Key findings from the focus groups and the survey highlighted the diversity within the KORE network and the value businesses find in collaboration through networking, mentorship, and exposure to new markets; all of which enhance sales. Business owners suggested that KORE could enhance its support by offering more tailored services and activities aimed at promoting growth and sustainability. The need for more comprehensive business support services was also recognized.
Key Takeaways:
- Diverse Network: KORE’s network spans a wide range of outdoor rec-tech businesses, highlighting the need for strategic and tailored services.
- Collaboration is Key: Businesses appreciate networking and mentorship facilitated by KORE, boosting market exposure and sales.
- Local Focus Matters: Emphasizing the North American market, particularly the Kootenay region, is crucial for growth.
- Direct-to-Consumer Sales: Maintaining direct customer relationships is vital for business responsiveness.
- Sustainable Growth: Businesses seek growth that ensures long-term sustainability, not just expansion.
- Comprehensive Support Needed: There is a demand for broader business support and coaching services.
- Sector Visibility: Enhancing the visibility of the outdoor recreation technology sector is crucial through events and collaborations.
- Structured Mentorship: Establishing formal mentorship and networking opportunities would benefit the community.
- Advocacy and Representation: Building a strong sector profile and engaging with government and economic partners is essential.
